All of these problems require the same knowledge. A fraction is simply the portion of a whole number. Here is the logic you need for it: For example... 6 1/2 To convert this to an improper fraction, you can change the 6 portion to a fraction. 6/1. Then, you have to remember, when adding fractions, you must use the least common denominator. To get that, for equation 1, multiply the 6/1 by 2/2. = 12/2. Now, you get 12/2 +1/2=13/2. Any number divided by 1 is itself, so when you are multiplying by a whole number not written as a fraction, you can put it as /1. Then just multiply the top by the top, and the bottom by the bottom, and divide your result out.

1) 6 1/2 is equal to 13/2 (6*2=12+1). Multiply 13/2 by 7/1 = 91/2 = 45.5 cents.

2) 450/1 *1/2 = 450/2 = 225 lbs.

3) 1/10 * 600/1 = 600/10 = $60

4)7/4*5/1= 35/4=8.75 miles.

5) 3/4 *1/2=3/8 of a quart.

I hope this helps!

(1) 1 pound of beans = 6 1/2 c
7 pounds of beans = 13/2 x 7 = 91/2 c (as improper fraction)

(2) 1 carton = 1/2 pound
450 cartons = 1/2 x 450 = 225 pounds

(3) 1/10 of salary = 1/10 x 600 = $60 per month to charity

(4)1 hour => 1 3/4 miles
5 hours => 1 3/4 x 5 = 35/4 miles (as improper fraction)

(5) Amount John drinks = 1/2 x 3/4 = 3/8 quarts

Hope this helps.

1. 6.5*7=45.5 cents
2. (1/2)*450=225 pounds
3. (1/10)*600=60 dollars
4. 1 and 3/4 = 7/4, so (7/4)*5=35/4=8.75 miles
5. (3/4)*(1/2)=0.375 quarts
