I was wondering the same thing. Then I read that they froze it and are taking it to a museum to preserve and study it. How they could kill something that they themselves say is so rare -- it's beyond me.
Here's the link to the article I read.

Yes, they killed the collosal squid they caught. It makes me sick. They are planning to do research on it!!! What mysteries will they find? Maybe they will try to find out if the squid are endangered & if so what is harming them? I ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER!!!!
IGNORANT MEN!!!! The human species is their biggest threat!!!
I cannot begin to explain how perturbed I am #@!@! One would believe that in a civilized, modernized society human beings would have moved away from the slaughtering and destruction of animals and environment!!! I guess I was wrong and we have a long way to go to become a descent species on this planet.
UNBELIEVABLE!!! Not just the size of that creature but also the fact that the men on the boat felt it neccessary to slaughter the magnificant creature. "WOW! Look at the size of that squid, it is enormous, probably the largest in the world!!!"
What would you do??? I would like to believe that most of us would NOT even think of killing it! Rather most would hopefully take a picture, enjoy the sight of it, then go on our merry way.
I agree with you when you say man does some stupid stuff!

Hello from NZ!
Will the rumors never cease?.... HERE IS THE TRUE STORY ... The skipper of the Nelson trawler John Bennett, 48 that netted the world's biggest and best specimen of an adult colossal squid said it was near death when it was brought aboard having been caught in the nets it He was fishing near Antarctica when the squid was hauled to the surface while dining on a 30kg toothfish hooked at a depth of about 1800m.
Nine crew took two hours to carefully envelop the near dead 10m-long squid in the ship's cargo net using long poles, then to cradle it and lift it on board with a crane. The crew knew it would not have survived, if released.
He said "To see one of these things up so close is a real privilege and I was concerned about preserving it in perfect condition for scientific research, allowing other people to see it and experience it as we had," Mr Bennett said.
It is now on ice in a Timaru coolstore -- is set to attract scientific interest from around the world.
it was not a trophy or thrown back as it was dying when it was caught.

First of all, it was probably caught in the net and they had no choice but to drag it in the boat in order to untangle it. Second, giant squid are extremally rare. Of course they took pics. Not only for thier personal benefit but also for scientific documantation. A live giant squid has never been caught. They kept it in order to turn it in to scientists for research. I can pretty much guarantee though it was dead when it hit the deck.
WOW- I just looked. Looks pretty dead to me. I guess they kept it.

Yeah they froze it and are going to send it to NZ so scientists can study the last rare speciment that was killed because it accidentally got trapped in a net or whatever. Figures that if they are so rare people would let it go, but it doesnt seems that way. Sad aint it
