If you want to buy a house you would employ a chartered surveyor to go out and look at it for you to ensure it was in good condition. He would also value it for you using market conditions and comparable values. Lenders insist on a valuation report before they will lend you money to buy a property.
If you want to develop a piece of land and borrow money to do it a chartered surveyor would look at your plans and put a value on the proposed development so that you could borrow money to do it.
Surveyors also look at commercial properties and value them.
They are regulated by Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
