My guess is that it is because of ignorance of the topic. The Americans you are speaking about probably do not have a strong education in geography, history, and government. Europeans have the benefit of traveling to other countries within their continent and learning about the differences, cultures, and histories of those countries. Many Europeans speak more than one language. Many Americans never travel outside the country their entire life and most only speak English.

I don't think that but than my Mother Grandmother and cousins are from Scotland I visited there 2 times to see my heritage and Scotland is wonderful I took the train to the highlands the ships to the islands and the bed and breakfast where great. The scenery is something I never will forget. I met a man in the highland that walked me through the moors and the wind was blowing and there was a ram and his mate in hills an island of Scotland. I am American half Scot went to England also but it will always be Scotland and its wonderful scenery and hospitality that will stay in my heart so anyone that has not visited Bonnie Scotland has missed a wonderful experience if they only went to England

When I was in London, I assumed everyone with an English accent was British. I have limited experience with Scots and Irish accents, but they do usually sound different to my American ears. I don't think all UK people are British, I usually ask where folks are from if I hear an accent.
Maybe I'm in the minority though.....

P.S. I'm saving for a vacation to Scotland in the next few years. If I ever manage to get there, I'll wave at you!

Uh what about the welsh there fella. Actually we're not taught history or geography so for us the UK is England as England is the dominate country in the union. At least that's what I think.

When I was Stationed in Spain the only flights I could get were to London. So that's where we spent our LV. Now that I'm retired I can't afford to go across the pond( two kids in college). But I don't think of it that way. I'd love to go to Scotland. I've seen many pictures of it and it does look like a more friendly and pretter place to visit.
