I haven't had my babies yet, but I plan to fly to California as soon as I an after I have them. I'm sure the doctors will let me know when is okay. But I would like to get a good idea from other mothers who may have tried this? I am having twins so there is a great chance that they are born early (I have already had the hospital scare) If they are unhealthy at ALL I would not take them, but I'm just asking if everything went well and they were healthy. How soon could I take them on an airplane?

My mother lives in California (it's where I'm from) so I would be staying with her and getting plenty of rest still. I wouldn't be staying in a hotel or anything. Like I said before though, if anything is wrong with the babies at all before I go, I would cancel the trip.

My cousin and his girlfriend had a baby just over a year ago. She is originally from North Carolina and now they live in Wisconsin. I believe she flew down to NC when the baby was about a month old. Just some advice, make sure you bring plenty of formula if you plan of bottle feeding. My cousin's girlfriend ran out of bottles and formula because their plane was delayed and had to feed the baby regular milk. Luckily she didn't have any problems digesting it.

You can take them on the same day they are orn. If you have more than one chil under the age of two, you must hae another adult fly with you and the kids cannot sit in the same row. It has to do with airmasks. I had the same problem. The way transit authorities look at it, a chid under the age of 2 is unable to hold an air mask to their face continuously, an understand that it must stay there and you, as an adult, can only physically hold two masks..your own and one child's. If, for example, there are 3 seats to a row, there will be 4 air masks. I flew with my son when he was 5 weeks old and my daughter was 14 months... I had to pay for my mom to fly round trip so that I could get to where I was going, with both of my kids!

From BabyCenter.com (great site!)

As long as you have a good car seat, short car trips are fine from day one. Air travel is another story. A newborn can fly at a week old if it's absolutely necessary, but it's better to wait until he's at least 4 to 6 weeks if you possibly can. The worry is all that recycled air on the plane. Babies are so vulnerable to germs during their first month, they're bound to pick up some stray bug if they're cooped up with dozens of strangers breathing recycled air.

I would like to add a little something that I feel is very important.
One difficulty that babies have is ear problems while flying. For a newborn, I think the best thing you can do is make sure they have a pacifier.
The reason I mention this is that I fly a lot and have heard many parents talk about this problem. They all agree that a pacifier is one of the best solutions, too.

Not a mom but I was a preemie and I personally think six to eight weeks after they've been born is reasonable.

So many germs and re-circulated air to bother them and all those people!

It's just my humble opinion, but you're still going to be recovering from the birth too. And especially if they're born early, their little immune systems aren't quite ready for the onslaught.

Your call of course.
