I already know that cleaning them professionally is an option but that it too expensive for me. Plus, they said that it probably doesn't need cleaning becasue my house is only 7 years old. It just started stinking here recently.

A seven year old house still has much of the construction dust & debris in the supplies. Having them cleaned is advisable.
If the odor started recently remove the door (panel) to the furnace and see if anything like a rodent got inside.
If not you might need to call either a HVAC company or someone tdhat specializes in duct cleaning.

I'm thinking a mouse died in the ducts. You may want to borrow a shop vac and attempt to clean them yourself. I don't know how well this will work because the hose is not that long unless you can buy an extension. My husband said he was going to do this at one time, but he never did. We had them cleaned at the new house. You might want to try a small business. They cut deals because they need the work. Also, they charge per vent. If they find it early, it won't be so pricey. Look inside the floor vents first incase you can spot something yourself. Then put a scented sheet in the furnace--sold at Walmart.

I"ve responded to this type of complaint many times and it usually occurs shortly after starting the furnace in the fall.

Rodents will often nest in the blower compartment (usually the bottom portion of the furnace) and get killed upon blower startup.

Check the bottom compartment and also inside the squirrel cage housing.

It could also be a dry floor drain trap. Pour a quart of water in each of the basement floor drains. Sometimes the gases from the floor drains are drawn into the furnace and the odors are blown all through the house.

Good luck.

Put 1 cup or more baking soda on a paper towel, fold corners, place on top of the filter at the air intake. Will help remove the odor, not a permanent fix as you have to change the bakingsoda weekly or as needed.

My central heating system has a filter. If that thing gets too dirty, your air will stink.
