Why is it that, on so many different occasions, a decent amount of white people, during a conversation, always give this monologue about how they're not racist. It comes in all variations - full out stating "i'm not racist", or giving some long, drawn out statement about how they wish people could get along blah blah and they always mention about the black friends they have...when all I did was ask for a lighter or the time or something.

Why does this happen. Do a lot of whites have this notion that blacks think they're all racist? I just find it tiresome sometimes to have to hear these disclaimers when i'd much rather be talking about something else. It's mostly from the 35 and up people, i've noticed.

Industry-You have a point.lol. I've noticed that too. They almost immediately say something pointing to me being black after the disclaimer..lol.

I agree with the paranoid thing. I think all this politically correct crap has made it so people are afraid to even speak out of fear that something might be considered..dare i say..racist. I think that's a big part of the problem nowadays.

Nope. I'm not racist, sorry. I'm engaged to a man who is asian/caucasian and we have a one year-old daughter. I'm accepting of all races and despise people of poor character, including blacks.

dawn-I could cut you down at any moment. Just turn on your communications and feel my wrath. LOL. No, but seriously, ever heard of the fallacy of hasty generalization.

I was at a bar last week and some drunk white woman was dancing around, I knew she was going to strike up a conversation with me because she kept glancing over at me. Eventually she stumbled over and start telling me the problem with white guys at bars, I was like.. WHAT LADY? If you wanna screw just ask.

Then I was talking to this older white guy at the bar, a veteran and some older black women walked in, suddenly the conversation switched to how he'd screw black women too and that pussie is all the same to him... I was like, how in the hell did we get on this topic!

All that for a lighter? You gotta find a new crowd to be with if thats what you get. Was it because it was a black lighter?

Actually I'm white and I don't get paranoid that people are thinking I'm racist. I don't go around announcing that I'm not. To the people who know me, they know I'm not. But otherwise everyone else can get stuffed if they think I'm racist. They can think whatever they like. Sorry, I'm in that stage of life. I'm 19.

Being white in today's society means constantly having to say you are sorry, ha ha. Well I am sure that you hear the "I'm not racist" comment from a variety of people but it is just them trying to get along without offending. Comments that are made by people of color made by someone who is white can at times grate the wrong way and be viewed as racist. Here in Virginia our state government debated a measure to apologize for slavery. I was absolutely astounded that we would even consider issuing an apology at this point in time not to mention that this was an apology from all Virginians even the descendants of former slaves.

I totally agree with you. I was reading a question just yesterday and a female asked 'why are Blacks so hard to get along with'...and she explains later on in the body of her question that she is married to a Black man, so she isn't racist, although her question was no doubt racist! I'm not white or black, although I feel that racism continues to be a huge problem in our society and it needs to cease. anyway, thank you for addressing this topic, it's an important one

From the perspective of a white chick who grew up in the 70s, we've had it crammed down our throats that we're evil, racist people. We are all paranoid of offending anyone. The younger generation (thank goodness) is more open-minded about race and that's why they don't understand the need for us to constantly try to relieve our perceived guilt.
Just my experience... and, yes, I do have black friends.... (friendly, gentle, honest smile)

I admit I am. We all are one way or another.

I am and I know I am because of the culture I was raised in. that applies to every person on earth just as much as it dows for me.

If a person is not racist they do not have to tell others they are not. People know immediately.

It is themselves they are trying to convince not you.

i guess society has got every one paranoid about this, rather like Communism in America in the 40s-50s the political correct brigade can find racism in even the most Innocent comment

lol, why would they say that when you just asked for a lighter?

Oh, you said ages 35 and up. I'm 20, so I wouldn't know, but people my age don't do that, some do but not most

Like the line from Shakespeare.... "Thou protesteth too much, methinks"
Maybe people think by insisting they aren't racist, they are actually trying to cover up latent racism? Or maybe it's a defense mechanism, they really aren't racist, but feel they have to defend themselves from having been accused of it.

I notice that as well adn its really annoying to hear, even though I'm white myself.
Especially annoying are the people who say 'I'm not a racist, my uncles girlfriends dogwalkers a blackie' and other such crap.
