I was under depression and was drinking hard (most days) 4 a month now. 2 weeks ago I went to my doc and took the Plan B pill cause the condom broke on my boyfriend and I. Now I just found out yesterday that I am 2 weeks pregnant, as you can already tell, the pill "didn't work" so I'm really scared of serious birth defects. My boyfriend really want me to keep so badly that he refers "us" as "the three of us" now, and I just told him yesterday. Myself mentally can't stand having another abortion but really can't afford any long term illness or problems if it was to happen, and also my daughter has been asking for a brother (but will settle for a sister) for 2 years now I need advice. Please this question is 4 people who have experienced it (the drinking) or have a professional answer. All other "maybe's, should, could, and would of" will be prosessed as harrassment/abuse. No offense but I need suffiencent answers or close to it and my patients has ran low so please experienced or profess

It is unlikely that the occasional drink a woman takes before she realizes she is pregnant will harm her baby. The baby’s brain and other organs begin developing around the third week of pregnancy, however, and are vulnerable to damage in these early weeks. Because no amount of alcohol is proven safe, a woman should stop drinking immediately if she even suspects she could be pregnant, and she should abstain from all alcohol if attempting to become pregnant.

When a pregnant woman drinks, alcohol passes swiftly through the placenta to her baby. In the unborn baby’s immature body, alcohol is broken down much more slowly than in an adult’s body. As a result, the alcohol level of the baby’s blood can be even higher and can remain elevated longer than the level in the mother’s blood. This sometimes causes the baby to suffer lifelong damage called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

Well here is what you need to consider:

Day 1 . . . . . Had sex, condom broke
Day 2-3 . . . .Sperm meets egg
Day 2-7 . . . .Fertilized egg travels until it implants in the uterus.

So as long as you stopped drinking withing 5 days of the broken condom I guarantee there will not be a problem. And even once the egg implants I believe it isn't until another week goes by that it shares your blood.

But I am not a specialist. Just some nice person on the internet. If you want to speak to a specialist in alcohol (and other drugs including prescription, OTC, and illegal) then you should call Motherisk.org. All they do is keep up to date on safety issues relating to pregnant and nursing women.

Alcohol and Substance Use Helpline - 1-877-327-4636 - for information about the fetal effects of alcohol, nicotine and drugs like marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy.

Yes it is Canadian, but anyone can call. I don't know if the 1-800 number will work for you. If not use a 10-10 long distance plan and call the main line:

Take care

I'm going to be honest with you. It IS a possibility. What I'd be more concerned about is the Plan B. You need to be honest with your dr (who you need to see right away). I know a girl who drank her whole pregnancy and did drugs until 7 months when she suddenly "found out" she was pregnant (yeah right). Her baby was fine.

If you can't afford another child, consider adoption. Please don't have an abortion, it is really bad for your body, esp because it sounds like this wouldn't be your first or second.

I can read the pain in your words, please also get some therapy for yourself. I mean this very sincerely. You, your unborn baby, your boyfriend, and your daughter all really deserve you to be up to your potentional. :) Good luck.

The Placenta is a magical organ. The purpose of the placenta is to filter out any toxins you have digested so they will not be passed into the fetus. The placenta is ripe and ready for action at when you get pregnant so its functions from day 1 of your pregnancy.

A couple of times of taking painkillers or alcohol will not at all harm your baby. When ladies drink heavily throughout their pregnancies this is when the placenta stops functioning as well and the baby can have low birth weight, organ disfunctions etc.

Your baby is safe, stop worrying.

No damage was done. The baby is completely self sufficient and gains nutrients by the yolk until about 8-10 weeks, which is when the placenta is formed and functional.

Stop drinking now, so you dont effect the baby later. It takes time for those toxins to leave YOUR body, so you dont want residual effects.

No, it can cause defects if you continue to drink through out or drink later on. your body does not feed baby in till 13 weeks. You will be fine. many people do not find out as early as you did and carry on drinking till further on in.
