depends on what you want to do with the wood, as pretty much any could be used depending. do you want to carve, or construct things? the tools required will be based on that.

So far as sculpture is concerned, any material will do. However if you're a beginner, start with soft wood- like birch.
Remember that wood dries out, and will crack when dry. Hard woods are less prone to cracking, but you need some real heavy tools to carve that!
Tools- basic is hammer and chisel. IMO best start with a light rubber hammer, or a "sculptor" hammer (cylindrical head). Normal wood working chisels with different profiles for the cutting edge - preferably concave and not flat.
If you have not worked wood before, take a few pieces and practice. It's not easy material- it splinters and snaps and the drying out warps the material and can destroy several hours or days of work.

My favorite is red cedar because of the beautiful grain that adds even more interest to the design. For my latest sculpture I used a variety of chisels, 4" grinder, detail sander , and various grits of sandpaper. For fine detail I used a dremel tool.

bass wood is used, or any wood with out grain , which causes the wood to split, it is also a soft wood, so any knife can wook
