There are a variety of ways that you can get a virus. It used to be that virusess were transmitted using floppy disks. The viruse was built to copy itself to the hard drive and then any floppy put in the floppy drive. You could still have this kind of virus spread by "thumb drives" they are not as common because they spread slowly and they do not have the kind of utility that Internet viruses have.
Most modern viruses use a program that is already on your computer. This is combined with the fact that you can specify the action taken when an error occurs. The virus causes and error and specifies a part of itself as the method to resolve the error. At that point the virus can do just about anything within your computer. Most often the program embeds itself so that it runs every time you boot the computer. It may send email out of your computer or contact websites with information on your computer.

Email attachments are the most common way viruses get installed on a computer. Some websites are malicious and have images that will embed viruses or other malicious software on your computer by simply opening the web page. The most common type of site that will be malicious will be porn sites, although they aren't the only ones. If you are running good Anti-Virus software and spyware/adware program, keeping the definitions updated and you have Real-Time Protection turned on, this will help catch most of these before they can infect your computer. With Email attachments, you can help protect yourself by not opening any attachments in emails from an email account you don't recognize and simply deleting the email without opening the attachment. If you aren't sure if it is legitimate or not, you can choose to save the attachment to your desktop WITHOUT OPENING IT, and then right click on the saved document and select "Scan For Virus". If your AV software definitions are up to date, it should be able to detect most infected files and you can delete it without opening it. Very few infected files are dangerous if you don't choose to open them. Once you open an infected file is when the infection of your computer is executed. Best rule of thumb is; if you aren't sure, delete the email. If it is important and legitimate, the person who sent it will contact you to see if you got it and they can resend it for you to open now that you know it is legit.

Most viruses come in through email, when someone opens an attachment.
