Scientist say that the fish and wildlife in the ocean is declining at a really fast rate, i heard one quote that it's almost 90% declined already. The giant squid that is left are probably having a hard time finding things to eat so maybe they are rising higher in the ocean to feed, and that is why we are able to see them finally.

giant squid live in very deep ocean waters, where it's difficult for humans to get to because of the severe conditions. it is uncommon to catch a giant squid, but it has happened many times in history.
giant squid rarely come close to the surface of the water, since their bodies are adapted to live in cold water with high pressure, and coming up too far could kill them. what was remarkable was that one was filmed live on camera. there's probably no better explanation than sheer luck.

Since giant squids live only in deep ocean trenches, it was rare for humans to venture so deep (due to absence of light, heavy pressures, varying temperatures, lack of proper protection equipment, etc.).
Today's technology provides ways to solve such problems, and thus scientists are able to venture into the almost impermeable depths to research and we get to see such giant squids.
