I would go withy the Toyota. They have a better track record. Do you remember the old tv commercials were the people were bragging about having 400,000 miles on their Toyota's? The Toyota and Honda engines are bullet proof. I have an 87 Accord that has 232,000 miles on it and it is still going strong. I have a friend, who's dad bought a 75 Toyota new and he still has it. It has 386,000 miles on it and he drives it daily. It has never had any major repairs done on it . Take your pick.

I work for Gm and Actually they are identical cars same motor and transmission, they are both made in the U.s in the same plant in California where Gm and Toyota have had joint ventures for the last 15 years Toyota corolla / Chevy prism Toyota Matrix / Pontiac vibe, the vibe will come in a few dollars cheaper then the matrix but will be under our longer warranty than Toyota's' They both have Toyota's 1.8- 4 cylinder motor, don't be afraid to buy American a lot of what you hear about American cars are not true and if they were breaking down left and right gm would not cover them for 100,000 miles so it is wiser to buy the vibe.

They are essentially the same car. I would choose the Toyota though.

-GM parts in car not as reliable as Toyota OEM
-Toyota interiors usually of higher quality
-Toyota probably has better resale
-overall Toyota Matrix more reliable (Consumer Reports)
-Toyota mechanics more familiar with Matrix as is similar to Corolla, no cars in GM's stable have similar motors/electronics

not only will the matrix be more reliable, it is also alot better looking, and according to the reviews i can find, scores higher across the board.
