The George Cross is the highest award given to a member of the public. The Victoria Cross, awarded for valour, can only be given to a member of the armed forces. It was first awarded in 1856 and is made from the melted metal of guns from the Crimean War. The last VC to be awarded was within the last 2 / 3 years during the present war in Iraq. While not excluded , no women have ever been awarded the VC.

The George Cross is silver, with a medium-sized central disc, and shortish straight vertical and horizontal arms. The ribbon is dark blue.

The Victoria Cross is bronze, with a larger central disc, and very short spreading vertical and horizontal arms (called "cross pattée"). The ribbon is crimson, or blue for pre-1918 naval VC's.
