Never forget the "sometimes Y" (and other letters like W and N) rule when talking about vowels.
A word CANNOT be pronounced without a vowel - vowels open the mouth for the release of air, while consonants close off the air flow. There are exceptions for certain onomatopoeias like "grrr" and "psst," but those aren't words, they're sound interjections.
