Ok this one puzzles me so i have to ask it... I have a friend who's ex husband just took his own life a couple of days ago ... I wont go into all the details but needless to say i feel this could have been handled differently and that he did not have to choose to end his own life the way he did. Why is it the men are more proned to commiting suicide then what women are? When you read the papers or hear the news it is usually the men that commit suicide and not women. I wonder why that is?

An interesting stat I learned in psychology class in college....women attempt suicide at twice the rate of men, but men are usually twice as successful at committing suicide. Men take a more direct approach, i.e. guns, jumping, etc. Women tend to take pills or other methods that are not usually successful. I feel for your friends. Suicide of a loved one is so tough and brings with it so much guilt....just reassure them that they did all they could.

Women actually attempt suicide more than men, but men usually go through with it more than women. Probably due to the methods that they use (guns) as opposed to the methods women use (pills). Believe it or not, suicide is also more common in black males than white and overall, suicide increases with age. Most likely due to failing health and or terminal illness.

The men friends I`ve asked or discussed this fact with say they feel stressed for many reasons. They fear rejection not only from their wives or girlfriends, but from others also. At work , home, or socially inferior to other men. Not making enough money. Lack of appreciation for who they are and what they contribute to a family. One even said "I feel kicked to the curb".

Women do it too. My step brothers mother hung herself in their garage when he was 5 and his sister was 7.
I would have to guess that if men do commit suicide more, it would be because they don't feel they have as many avenues for help that women have. If a woman is upset, it is easier for her to express her fears and feeling , where men tend to be more introverted about those things.

Women attempt it for attention. Men just can't deal with emotions.

They are guilty of more things and can't handle emotions very well. More importantly, it is about CONTROL.
