Yep, he's written a good bit of the stuff he directed and directed and produced plenty of original stuff written expressly for him to do.

I remember a story of a japanese mansion and death, the family was so frightened they vacated the house, also Godzilla was written because of nuclear testing. I try to find out why crime/scary novels were written. There has to be some websites listing the true events of a novel. Um-check out Art Spiegelman: Maus, a Survivor's Tale. It's the true account of a holocaust survivor at a concentration camp. Also check outr the mercury, a paper from Pennslyvania. True stories brings back memories is the title of the article. Jailing the Johnston Gang, Bruce Mowday

Well, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was an original screenplay by Spielberg. To date, I think that's the only movie he directed from his own script.

I think E.T. is original.
Close encounters might be, and the Indiana Jones movies were thought up by George Lucas, so they're not from a book as such.
1941, always, saving private ryan, the terminal are also I believe movies not based on books.

ET springs to mind along with Duel, Raiders of the Lost Ark and consequnt sequels, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, are amongst those that may be considered originals. There may be others but i can't remember them, sorry.

In his youth when he still had some creativity and courage, yes. In the last decade when he got old and cowardly, no.
