,It does not cause people to forget things. If you want to read find a quite place to do it, with no outside distractions. Just because a person notices other things while a person is talking to them doesn't mean they haven't heard everything that was said. Everyone with attention deficit has to learn how to work with it. It is a gift if you learn how to use it. A person with attention deficit was usually considered a workaholic. This is because they have learned how to use the gift and can multi-task like crazy. It is harder to sit down and read if there are a lot of distractions taking place but a conversation is not a problem with distractions. It may be very annoying to the person talking. If they feel they are being ignored. I get that a lot. All I can say to your question is practice. I do not like the idea of medication.

Attention deficit is hereditary and I am happy it runs in the family. We do tend to get a little messy sometimes but that can be corrected too.

...The pharmacy industry loves ADD and ADHD diagnoses in kids sufficiently. In fact they adhere to this philosophy profusely! Too many individuals are steeped up on the idea that mind altering drugs are the answer to overly active individuals in everything. I say the pharmacology industry are really the ones that need to get their heads put on straight though. Hyper active minds and individuals are generally highly intuitive ones. IQ's generally run extremely high in these certain types of individuals. These children and adults simply need an outlet for their highly energized imaginations and intuitive creative thinking really. Take half of the mind altering drugs away from these people,...and you simply might find a highly intelligent endearing life form seriously. No wonder half the population of society finds themselves sitting in the therapists chair unreasonably. Don't get me wrong here though either. Disturbed minds are a totally different matter all together. A sincere diagnosis by a licensed psychologist will help in these matters. Make certain you find a reputable one for certain..unless they're taking kickbacks from the pharmacy industry of course. Yikes!!!

With patience.
Sometimes medicaments help (under supervision of doctor), in some cases healthy diet (vitamins, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids...). The child will learn better when he/she has possibility to change the type of activity more frequently (reading - physical activity...).
