i love diet coke and do drink quite a lot of it, but recently read that if you are trying to concieve you should avoid artificial sweetners. Has anyone else heard this?

It's a controversial issue, but many healthcare professionals believe that artificial sweetners are toxic to the body and can cause a range of health problems. On it's own it is unlikely to be the sole cause of you being unable to conceive, but the toxic load on your body is an important consideration when ttc.
You should also bear in mind that diet coke contains caffeine which is linked with miscarriage if you drink more than a few cans a day.
If you only drink coke and no water then you could also be constantly dehydrated, which isn't good for your body.
Diet Coke also contains high levels of phosphorus which can interfere with the absorption of other vitamins and minerals.

If you are trying to concieve, then it would be best to limit the amount of diet coke in your diet. When you get pregnant, you will need to limit the amount of caffeine you drink anyway.

I have heard this but I think it is just a precaution. I actually think the caffine may be worse for the process than the sweetner. I wouldn't worry about it. Try to replace some of the diet coke with water since you are supposed to drink 10 8oz glasses a day while TTC. Good Luck

I think sweeteners in extremely large quantities might be a problem. A diet coke a day isn't going to hurt either of you.
