So far as the safety is concerned, in one sentence, Americans are more safer in India than the Indians in America!

Yes if you take normal safety precautions. Stay in the best hotel you can afford and dont skimp on that. Be wary of sudden friendships with strangers. Look after your documents and valuables and never let them out of your sight. Dont leave bags unattended even for a second. Dont flash money, expensive cameras and the like. Rent a car with a driver. The driver is provided by the rental agency. Dont drive in India. Avoid public transport. Just be careful and you will do alright. In general Indians are polite and welcoming, once you get past the officious bureaucracy at the airport.

Very Safe place
In some areas like Goa and Mamallapuram u could see lot of Forigeners

Ohh..................Danger is everywhere not only in India but in America also!!!!! Do u really think that America is one of the safe country but i don't think so, after the 9'11incident occured.

if you take proper precaution....india is safe.....if this is your first trip... my advice is:
1. book a good hotel... preferably 5 star or 4 star ..
2.. hire a travel guide.... from a reputed company....
like thomas cook... cox and king....etc....

no risk , no gain
have faith in GOD.
india is a pleasent country , but even south in dians feel risk in north india & north indian feel risk in south india.

you can stay in good hotel, good tourist facility, everything ,
