PAN stands for Permanent Account Number.

To get a PAN card you have to apply for the same.
You need to be of 18 yrs or more.
Resident of India.

Documents required for applying for PAN card are

1.Residence proof.(Elect.bill/ telephone bill/voter id etc.)
2.Identification proof.(Driving license/voter id/ degree certificate etc)
3.if you are in a job then a certificate from your employer.
Above documents are needed in a photo stat copy.

PAN is necessary in the following cases according to Section 139A of IT act 1961
1> sale or purchase of any immovable property valued at 5 lakh or more.
2> sale or purchase of a motor vehicle.
3> a time deposit exceeding 50000/- in any bank or in post office savings bank.
4> a contract for sale or purchase of Securities exceeding value of 10 lakhs.
5> opening a bank account.
6> making an application for a telephone connection including celluar telephone connection.
7> bill payments to hotels and restaurants exceeding 25000/- at any one time.
