How about Maximus, after the character from Gladiator. This gives you the benefit of being able to call him Max while he is a little pup, therefore a nice sweet name and then call him Maximus when he grows up and becomes more fiercesome. Its a name associated with chivalry and honour so you could do a lot worse.

Have a look at his personality and see if there's anything about it that inspires you. Otherwise names like Ben, Champion, Charley, Goldie, Harvey, Harrison, James, Oscar and Sam are always good names for this type of dog. Have fun naming him. I have always had had Golden Retrievers myself so I can imagine how cute he must be.

But you have to give him to me cause I just adore them and my old golden retriever would love him as her puppy, he will bring you hours of joy, they are the most beautiful loving dog going.
