I just wanted to add, there's this program called ad-aware. The free version it'll scan your hard drive for spyware and ad programs. I'd suggest downloading installing and letting it run a couple times. It should either clean up your PC from those pop up programs, or just get hung up, in which case you should backup and reinstall windows. You can find ad-aware here

First, only use Internet Explorer for websites that don't support Firefox web browser. Install FF with the Ad Block plugin, and enable the pop up blocker in both IE and FF by going to Tools - Internet Options and checking its on.
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus

Next, install Spywareblaster and Spybot Search and Destroy. They protect your browser from all kinds opf spyware.
Then install Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware.

http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Scan your pc with Spybot and Ad-Aware.
If the pop ups happen when you're not connected to the internet - when the modem is unplugged from the phone line - you have spyware on your pc.
If one scan doesn't get rid of the problem, you may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Finally, always unplug from the internet when you're not online, especially if you have broadband (always on) connection.
And check you have a decent firewall and anti virus.

You dont need a pop up blocker, for they will not help you with 'those' type of pop ups....

let me guess, sometimes even when you are not surfing the internet, they still pop up correct?

if so, then you have a virus or two, and should backup all important documents, and talk with your local computer pro or neighborhood geek and have him reformat your computer and reinstall your OS.

also you should invest in a good anti virus and firewall program (personaly i recommend norton (nis 07 spesificaly))

hope this helps...

There are many free pop-up blockers to choose from on the Internet. Every search engine site (Yahoo, Google, etc...) has a free tool bar you can install in your browser that has a pop-up blocker feature.

If you don't like those, try a download site like tucows, download.com, cnet, or something and you can search for free pop-up blockers (and see reviews from users on how good each are).

Download Firefox 2. It is the best browser available today. It comes with an inbuilt pop-up blocker.

I use Ad Killer: http://www.softcows.com/killer/ It's free, it works and gives you options on the level of protection you want etc.

One thing, be careful if you always have your volume up as it has a shooting noise when it "blows up" the ad! You can turn this off in the options, but I nearly pooped my pants the first time I heard it!

You can also see the sites you have blocked and choose to unblock anything at a later date etc.
