I breastfed my first child for 25 months. He self-weaned/ I kinda dried up getting pregnant with my second. My second is still breastfeeding at 20 months and will probably go longer than the first. The American Academy of Pediatricians reccomends AT LEAST a year and the World Health Organization says two years or longer. Studies show natural child-led weaning occurs between ages 2-6. The benefits of breastfeeding continue for as long as the child is breastfed. In fact the IQ level actually goes up the longer a baby is breastfed. Go to kellymom.com for a lot of sound information on breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding (past 1 year.) Of course any breastfeeding is better than none.

My 1st I didn't know any better so I weaned him to formula at 8 months.

My 2nd I nursed for 14 1/2 months then weaned. He had been biting for almost a month and I was so sore. I wish I hadn't weaned him though and I kept going.

Just an FYI. It's very very VERY uncommon for a baby to self wean before 1 1/2 years old. Usually it is a nursing strike and the parents just assume it's weaning.

I have been breastfeeding my daughter for 8 months now. I will continue to do so until she is 2 or more or when she weans herself. My mum breastfed me until I was 15 months old, and my 3 brothers about that long as well. We all pretty much weaned ourselves. I love the bond I have with my daughter, and know that me and my mother share that same bond.

I have been nursing non-stop for 4½ years now.

Baby #1 weaned on his own at 3½ years old.
Baby #2 is still nursing a few times a day at 2½ years old.
Baby #3 is exclusively breastfed at 11 weeks old.

Due to several issues...I was only able to breastfeed or pump for 8 weeks./....I'm going to try again, this time, but we'll have to see how long I haven't decided....it will be 8 weeks minimum again as long as my milk stays in.

18 months. I had to stop because I needed to take medicine that would excrete into my breast milk the wasn't good for my baby. Part of me was glad that I had more freedom from breast feeding. But, at times, I miss it because of the bonding with my daughter. But, she adjusted well and is doing just fine. Running around and being a holy terror. LOL...

My son was 3 years old when he weaned himself (he is 12 years old now), and my 2 year old daughter is still nursing..she will also self-wean. I believe in child-led weaning as it seems to be easiest on both mom and child!

My first girl weaned herself at 18 months, I wasn't ready but she was ;) I am due in April and I intend to nurse until this little girl weans herself as well, they know when it's time for them to stop!
