to get the person they are arguing riled up? if you argue with someone who is very emotional they are more likely to make mistakes, and miss your mistakes?

not that i'd do it but that would be a 'good' reason to?

Bad spelling and poor grammar does not lose an argument and people who constantly make the mistake of pointing this out are entirely missing the point of an argument. They're not giving their argument in response to an argument put, they're just wasting time talking about spelling etc.

I don't think they do think they have won the argument, all they are doing is pointing the errors you have made. An example of this is the way you have formed your question because it would have been better to have put it this way:
Why do people think that they have won an argument by pointing out that you have misspelt something?
Cheers

It's a lame way to get 2 points. I've pointed out errors (like the fact that you misspelled the word misspelled), but always provide a real answer as well. They are just losers...ignore them.

It's"grasping at straws". If you can't formulate a defense or argument, pick at something else. It's lame and I think the people doing it appear smart to themselves, but it comes off as petty. It's on the same level as name calling if you can't think of something to say.

I just answered this question...because it makes them feel better about themselves to point out someone elses mistakes...people are selfish and they think they know everything.

it's an admission of defeat since they clearly knew what you meant and couldn't respond to it

(unless it was completely incomprehensible, which is the case at times)

Hehe.. Actually, they are just pointing out their superiority because they are all grammatically correct and the asker is not, so that gives the answerer more leverage because he seems smarter.

They are just ignorant....and to be ignored! It takes so little to make a dum dum feel superior.
