We are a republic.
I think you mean why did the referendum on Head of State, Queen or an Australian President.
The reason why we still have the Queen was the way of the wording on that referendum was.
Would we support an Australian as head of state picked by the Government whom we elected.
I did not and would not support that.
I would support if we could pick it our self our head of state.
I am a Republican but I would not let Little Johnnie or Beasley at the time pick it for me.

The Current system has more sway with the feeling of the common man , i would guess.....
