you could need a tune up , but you could also have other problems like a bad or weak oxygen sensor. their is a lot of sensors on a vehicle that could cause poor gas mileage, so my best suggestion is to bring your car to your local independent service station and let somebody take a look at it. If you do bring your car in to a garage, a little advice pick one you can trust and stay with the same one. If the get to know you they will do right for you and your car.

p.s. maybe check your air filter.

Here's your best bet:

Start with a little fuel cleaner...I prefer Seafoam (red/white metal can, can be found at most autoparts stores)

From there, go to your air filter...they're usually $10 or so, and just about any brand will do.

Means you're in the store, grab some oil and an oil filter.

Grab a fuel filter for the car as well (ask at the service desk).

If you really want to get in deep, pull one of your spark plugs out and take a look at it...what kind of condition is it in?

The best investment you can make is to buy a Hayne's Manual...they're year/make/model specific...in other words, yours will be for a 99 ("and up" maybe) Ford Taurus. You can find this at the store as well. In the back of it is where you can compare the condition of your spark plugs with some pictures.

All told, without buying spark plugs (ask at the service desk for that too), you may spend about $50 for what I mentioned above and you'll be able to give yourself a tune up. I know it seems intimidating to do this work on your own, but the Hayne's Manual is one of the most comprehensive, usuer-friendly car manuals out there, full of pictures, great descriptions and a full-on maintenance schedule.

The spark plugs may be a little more expensive, and in some cases, a little hard to get to. Sometimes it's best to get to them from underneathe of the car (but actually, Hayne's should fill you in about it).

If you can accomplish all of this on your own, then you've essentially given your car a tune-up and saved probably $1-200, PLUS, completing something like car maintenance--which most people think of as too hard to do--you'll feel like a million bucks...it's really satisfying.

Finally, check it out...did that work or not? If it doesn't work, then there is something deeper. Someone mentioned a sensor or two, but usually, a faulty sensor will throw a code in your computer and light the "check engine" light (places like Autozone will not run a free diagnostics check on your car unless that light is on).

How many miles is on the car? If around 100,000 miles the car is ready for a tune up. Also if the weather is cold outside, you do indicate that, running 10 minutes to warm will use gas with no millage as well as the cold weather will cause it to use more gas when driving.

It could be your air filter that needs changed. I don't think getting plugs and wires is going to fix this problem. It's not going to run harder just because it's cold outside. Having your heat on shouldn't reduce your next fill up by 150 miles.

it takes more gas in the winter, cause you have to let it warm up.when was the last time you had a tune-up.it probably wouldnt hurt if it had a tune-up.like plugs, wires, gas filter, air filter and so forth.also something else can help.get some throttle body cleaner and have someone clean the throttle body,so it can breathe better.

yes some of it is, the motor is cold, an harder to turn over, then it got to run harder to heart the oil up, but any way, with that many miles , being put on it yes, get a tunes up, it save you a lot

that is not an old car, so you may consider and gas additive and any engine cleaner instead any tune up. It`s less expensive too.
