Is the IT industry the worst when it comes to ageism?

I don't think age really comes into it. When I was 25 I worked for a publishing company and the head of the IT department was a guy called Brian who was 62.

I think that if you stay on top of your game and keep your knowledge updated (the IT industry moves very quickly) then you should have no problems.

Brian may have been 62 but as far as knowledge went, he knew easily ten times more than the entire IT department combined. With someone like that it doesn't matter how old you are, you are indispensible.

No, in my field IT age has nothing to do with it. Its ability and since there are no real IT schools, yeh I know I see them being offered but hire one sometime and see what you get, yeh there trainable but hands on and experience are number 1 in this field. You can get an IT cert or some computer degree but Computer networking is best taught hands on and thats because it changes so fast. Microsoft certs are considered the best at the moment. Just get something like that and you don't need a degree to be making 60,000 to start around where I live. NH
Sorry got of the point, I feel the older the better and Im just 30. Its all about brain power.

You could well be right! It's a dangerous assumption because a lot of more mature candidates not only have the knowledge but experience too. Everyone knows how quirky computers can be...you definitely need experience of all the weird stuff that can happen to be able to sort probs. out.

Why do they think it's a young persons thing??? They need to open up their minds a bit 'cos they're probably missing out on the cream.

by law, employers cannot take age into consideration, if you can prove youre up to the job in hand then there shouldnt be a problem, i do know that age discrimination still does happen in the uk but you need to put 1 foot forward and just show them you can handle the job especially in i.t as a lot of companies do tend to go for the more experienced person regardless of age.

Once you get to 40 most companies think you are incapable of learning new IT skills. Tendency is to get youngsters in (about 20yrs) use them up, burn them out and replace. The practice of Ageism is now supposed to be illegal but prove you're not a victim of it.

No. Most companies are firing a majority of their IT workers and sending the jobs overseas. Has nothing to do with age.
