General views or opinions? Since there are no clinical trials to back up the results for alternative medicine, it's like comparing apples and oranges. Clinical trials is the arena of modern medicine. So the answer has to be given for things I've used and gotten results. Alternative medicine, better knows as holistic health therapy or traditional medicine, has been around a lot longer than modern medicine. Acupuncture, feng shui, herbal, reflexology, shiatsu, auyervedic, have been around a long time but have not shared the popular propaganda of modern medicine. Alternative medicine addresses the cause of a manifested problem and seeks to cure it through a holistic approach to the illness. A chines herbalist can virtually cure any physical problem with the help of the person in need of help. Unfortunately sick people rarely stay cured. Instead they repeat all the same bad habits that got them sick in the first place. If the sick person is cured and learns how to stay that way, then alternative medicine works. Another factor in healing is your personal beliefs. If you believe in a modality, then it will work for you. If you don't believe in a modality, then it won't work for you. This may sound strange but its true. Many people believe in modern medicine, so most of the time it works. But it's not a cure, only a patch because it doesn't address the cause of the problem, which holistic medicine does.
I wish I could give you the definitive answer your looking for but this has to be your search and decision. Choose a modality, study it and find out for yourself. Then choose another modality, study it and again learn. Being a healer isn't easy, but it is rewarding to the soul.

I would just like to let you know that some alternative medicines or therapies have been studied and have been proven to work. I am a Wellness Consultant ( I work in alternative medicine). There is one company that produces natural products that I believe to the best, mostly because they are very respected in the traditional medicine field because of the studies and what they have proven. They have the only know product that helps diabetic norapathy. But just like traditional medicine most the the things have to be continued to be used even after the problem has gotten better. I would never say although that we do not need traditional medicine. I have two children and my baby is 6 months old, I found a doc that would respect my natural decisions and I respected his also and I had a wonderful pregnancy, my girls doc also respects me and I her and she understands my views, but I do need her for somethings and will continue to need her. I believe we need both in our lives and that they both can benefits us when practiced correctly.

the question is being answered by an Indian, who has tried a lot of alternative medicines for which India is famous, like Ayurvedha,
Siddha, Naturopathy, Varma.[and of course,magnetotherapy,
Homeopathy and Unani] The choice of selecting Allopathy or
alternative medicine depends on the disease we have. Depending on it we can take an easy decision. I know about a
few diseases which CERTAINLY cannot be cured by allopathy
and vice verse. But the most important factor that should be
taken into consideration is SIDE EFFECTS. If any guidance
[repeat]only guidance is necessary, I can help you because I am
[not a physician] a physically challenged person. Wish you
a speedy recovery.

The chief disadvantage of alternative medicines is that they have not been tested for safety and efficacy (in the US). Studies have been done and frequently the products do not contain the amount of active ingredients they are advertised to contain.
The situation in parts of Europe is different where herbal products are tested and regulated (Germany being a good example)

Advantage: no side effects
Disadvantage: It takes time to work, since they are natural/herbal.
