You need to distinguish between interrogation techniques and torture. Many...as proved by your answers, so far, do not make a distinction.
For instance, properly done...bright lights, loud music, having to stand for prolonged periods of time, etc., are valid and productive interrogation techniques. Water boarding, electrical shocks, inflicting physical pain, etc., is torture. So, yes, real torture, is unreliable AND immoral.
Serious interrogation done by people who know how to properly apply it AND when there is a specifc, serious need, while sad and distasteful is appropriate...and I'm sure is being done by members of our military.

First, you have to define torture.
Second, you have to define what "use" means.
Representatives of the United States were been present while a man was literally roasted over an open fire where information was extracted that was used against enemies of the United States.
Does that constitute the use of torture? I believe it does even though the representatives of the United States did not tie the guy up or start the fire.
A lot of people think torture is okay. A lot of people think torture is wrong.
I think it is wrong having been tied up and beaten by police officers in the United States.
In fact the management of prisons in the US deliberately pit various groups against each other and encourage a group of very violent inner prison forms of government that are pitted against each other and loosely allied with the prison management. I believe that this form of management of prisons constitutes a form of torture.
You can read a lot more about these kinds of things at Amnesty International.

Every study on the subject shows that torture does not yield reliable information. Only information received is what the torturer wants to hear (because that is the only time the torturing will stop).

The American government does use torture because they don't care how or how good the information they get is. They will torture a confession out of you then use it to convict you with in a Mickey mouse trial.

Since it's been proven that the American Gov't does use torture, I don't know if this question can be answered.

Because it doesn't look good in the media. Don't kid yourself for one second that we (America) don't torture people for answers. Our President doesn't even recognize the Geneva Convention because it's just too damn vague for him to interpret. He still is waiting for a definition of cruel and unusual.....
