You could always buy an external hard drive. What you would do is plug this hard drive into the USB port of your old PC, and save the files that you would like to transfer to your laptop onto the hard drive. You would then unplug the hard drive from your old PC, plug it into your laptop, and then copy the files from the hard drive to your laptop. This is the manual transfer method. External hard drives usually start around $100. There is a cheaper method, and if you're not exactly computer savvy, this is also an easier method:

Office supply stores such as Staples and Office Depot sell software that is designed specifically for transferring files from one PC to another. The two that first come to mind I believe are called Transfer Your PC, and PC Relocator. Basically, these programs copy all your desired data files, applications, and setting from your old PC to your new one. This takes the hassle out of having to manually transfer them via an external hard drive. The software does it for you. You can expect to spend between $60 for PC Relocator, and $70 for Transfer Your PC (this is based on the prices found at OfficeDepot.com).

I don't know, about the technology, you mentioned, - what's a "FIRE-WIRE"?, - but, there's a MUCH EASIER way, of achieving what you seek! Save ALL, of that which you wish to transfer, between the two machines, onto a "PEN-DRIVE", - a "PLUG-IN" device, that goes into a USB port, - then, plug the PEN-DRIVE, into the USB port, on the LAPTOP, - and REVERSE the "DRAG-AND-DROP" procedure! SEE, - TOLD you it was EASY, - didn't I? For large amounts of data, this MAY take a number of "TRIPS", between the two, - but, it REALLY IS, absolutely "IDIOT PROOF"! It HAS to be, - or I wouldn't have a CLUE, how to DO IT! Feel FREE, to contact me, again, if you wish, - I'd LOVE to know, if I have HELPED!

I had same problem too, cable did not work no matter what i did, in the end i bought a cheap external hard drive from ebuyer. So much easier and quicker and very handy to store files that you dont want on your internal hard drives. And they are plug and play.

if you have installed the xp in both computers from the same cd then you can do it.

In your laptop you will get an option called 'Files transfer wizard', open that wizard and follow the instructions.

you can do it by this method.

Good luck

your network settings will show if you have a firewire network connection.....nothing will just 'happen', you first need to confirm there is a link between the two pc's.
control panel----network connections, will show what is there.
you may need to run network connection wizard if both on XP................. if on 98, good luck, you will need it ;)

Or you could just copy them all onto CD and upload them that way - also means you end up with a back up copy too.

why don't you just email them all as attachments to yourself?
Then open them on your laptop and download. I've done this with a lot of mine to 'preserve' them in case this computer goes bust.
