I'm wanting to make a website offering info regarding yoga/health/martial arts/fitness etc. I suppose the content is irrelevant to the question. Anyway, what's the best place to start as a way for me to figure out how to do this? And if you run into any of my nerdy friends tell them to call Dave

Go To "www.freewebs.com" and make Yourself a Account Then You will have a Website.

If Your Username Is "thething" then you website will be "www,freewebs.com/thething"

Well...

do you want to pay, or take a free route?

For bussiness, I would recomend paying for the .com or .net

but if its just for yoga/health/martial arts/fitness info, then I recomend just setting up a free website and getting a feel of how the internet works and what it takes to run a website.

I will take this in two parts... First Part would be a buissness website....

You will need to 'reserve' a name,
for example www. healthy yoga martial arts.com

This will set you back about 15 bucks (US) for a one year reservation on that DNS address.

Next you will need somthing to place in your website. You will need a server for this. All a server is, is a computer that is dedicated to sending files to the correct people when they are requested. If you are not the most technically inclined and or do not have a very fast internet/slow server then I would recomend puchessing (well renting) a server, which is usualy a better bet for bussiness anyway (usualy rented servers are very very fast, and are never down, also some keep very good 'multi servers' set up world wide, so that if your server goes out in the US, then your server in Canada will kick in and your customers will not even miss a beat.)

and lastly, you have the name, you have the space, now all you need is content....

You will need to learn a web language or three, and or talk with a tech or neighborhood geek, and or use a program like that of front page or any other web creation software.

So, here is my best advice.... if you are going to make a website for bussiness, you should take advantage of yahoo hosting for small bussnesses. They offer a low rate on the 'server' for as little as 10$ or so a month, and they even cover the first year reservation of your name. In addition they have wonderful support and more goodies then you can shake a stick at... also they are a very nice software by the name of Yahoo! site builder that is literaly a point and click website creation that is clean and very user friendly (one with NO programing knowlage can use it with no problem).... lastly yahoo backs up its servers almost hourly, so if you were to be attacked by hackers, you can have all your information and data back in moment!

okey, part II, free websites...

No better way to learn a web language and other great life lessons then to start your own free website.

Here are some tips you should keep in mind...

1st... Free Hosting:
a google search will come up with thousands of free web hosting websites, and just take a look at the ones that look good to you and choose your favorie. Things to look for when reviewing the free hosting and members websites, would first and foremost be note the pop ups, and look for a website with the least amount of pop ups.

Personaly I have always fancyed angelfire, for they only have one pop up (on the index page), so if you simply make another immation index other then that one you will have found a free hosting website with no pop ups. ( here is the website http://www.angelfire.com )

2nd Website Forwarding...

when you sign up for a free hosting website you will notice somthing very quick... your address will be long, and annoying...

for example...
http : // www, angel fire.com / my / website for yoga health martial arts

you will need to take advantage of .tk's web forwarding service (free by the way). (here is the website... http://www.dot.tk )

What the forwarding service will do, is you can choose a name, ie.
www.yoga health martial arts.tk

and then when anyone types that address , they will auto maticly be sent to the longer uglyer one.

3rd.... programing...

learn a language or two, look into learning flash... dont worry about server side languages like php, for angelfire and other free hosting websites do not offer php support. html will never fail you, and you should know a spot of javascript too...

welll i hope this helps you out alittle bit.... and good luck with your website!!!
