order of size, from large to small, is plateau, mesa, butte

A mesa, which means "large, flat topped landform, edged by cliffs", is similar to, but smaller than a plateau, and similar to, but larger than a butte.

a plateau takes up a much larger area mesa and buttes are just tall, steap/hilly things
