I think we are going to surprise a lot of people this year. We return something like 10 starters on defense (many of which were freshmen last year and played well) and 7 on offense (which was virtually unstoppable at the end of the season once Mitchell took back the starting QB spot). Many people seem to forget that we did beat Florida and Tennessee the year before. So Spurrier has already proven he can win the big game here (and that was with much less talent). In all honesty we should have beaten Tenn (2 or 3 freaky bounces of the ball gave them touchdowns) and Florida (3 blocked kicks= a 1 point loss, not to mention that Moss that blocked them had been caught with pot a few weeks before but Urban decided to wait to release that and suspend him til after our game. That tells me a lot about his character compared to Spurrier's). With everyone that we return and the way Mitchell has played ever since he took over in the second half against Arkansas, he has a great shot at being All-SEC this season. As the season gets closer, we are probably going to become the trendy pick as the dark horse for the SEC Title.

Steve Spurrier has assembled a great recruiting class. Stephen Garcia looks like a very promising QB. It is very likely that in a couple of years South Carolina will be able to climb higher in the SEC ladder. You have to remember though, that SEC is a tough conference and even teams that will be powerhouses in other conferences , like Georgia, end up looking average.
Its a tough road for the Gamecocks and with the Gators weaker on defense this year, Spurrier at least has a good chance against Florida whom they almost beat last year.

No. Though Spurrier is known for his ability to recruit, South Carolina is not only battling with other SEC schools, but area ACC schools for top-notch talent. Yeah, he had a heck of a class, but so did Florida, Tennessee, Clemson, Wake Forest and etc. Winners, yes, definitely. Powerhouse? No way. Too much competition, and they live smack in the middle of it.

I'm going to have to disagree with you right now because the Gators, not only are the current champions, but also had one of the top 3 best recruiting classes. And with Timmy Tebow, I'm having a hard time seeing anyone knock them off their podium any time soon.

Not next year or the year after, but they are a sleeping giant and can make some noise eventually. Look at all of the close games they had this year against quality teams.
