I think those people that make such a big deal about books being turned into films really don't know what they are talking about. Most films that have been made have been based on some sort of source material - usually books. It's not just all the recent ones like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Bridget Jones etc. You have loads, whether or not you like the films as much as the books is your iopinion, but usually peopel watch films without even having heard of the book - so why bother getting upset. If you think the film wont do the book justice - then just avoid it ok?
Great films that were originally books - The Godfather, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Shining, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, Oliver Twist (original David Lean film), Fight Club, Goodfellas, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Rebecca, Remains of the Day, Trainspotting.
Books I would like to see made into films: -
Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
Arthur & George - Julian Barnes
The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks

Books that would make good movies...what an interesting question. Congratulations!
I think Tad Williams' 'The War of the Flowers' would make a terrific movie or animated movie. Someone mentioned 'The Forever King'...that would be a good one, too. Also, Michelle West's series "The Sun Sword" (there are 6 books...a miniseries, for sure!) would be fabulous in film - better than Lord of the Rings.
Here are two books you may not have heard of, but they would make good movies: Maria V. Snyder's 'Poison Study' and 'Magic Study.' She is a new author and won the Compton Award for best new fantasty for 'Poison Study.'

The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters, and the Outlander/Cross stitch series by Diana Gabaldon.
Also, a few years down the track, I'd like to see the Harry Potter books made into seven mini-series, where they actually include parts of the story that are relevant to the plot, instead of focusing on special effects (ten-minute dragon-chase anyone?) It would be nice for the Marauders' Map to be explained too.

I just finished reading The Forever King by Molly Cochran and Warren Murphy. I think it's almost like the movie Merlin because I just watched it not too long ago. Also I can't wait to read Hannibal Rising so I can go see that movie too. I love to read the book before I watch the movie. I did that with the Da Vinci Code and I'm so glad I did because I would have been so confused just watching the movie. Happy reading!!!

Books into films do NOT work. One person's film ideas for a book are NOT the same as the next person's. All the films that I have seen that have been based on books are VERY DISAPPOINTING, but other people love them.
Take the first Bridgit Jones's Diary - I loved the BOOK but HATED the film (as the best bits had been left out in my opinion)and advised other people to avoid it. But a lot of people loved the film - my Mum for one but hated the book.
So LEAVE BOOKS in their natural state.

i read the green mile by stephen king and thought it would make a fantastic film but was worried about how they'd get the magic and the size of john right. when it came out at the cinema i refused to watch it for fear it would ruin the book, however watched it on video when it came out and loved it. they managed to capture everything from the book.

Jose Saramago's "All the Names".
I'd kill to see its script written by Jonathan Nolan and the movie directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento's team). But no one will ever think of that...
K: I know what you mean, I am also usually disappointed, but there have been 2 exceptions: 1984 and Solaris (the Tarkovsky movie).
