Ever since the 70's I've always wondered why the refrigerators are so small in TV shows. They are small in Friends and they were small in most TV shows in the 70's. I used to think it's because the actors were big but the refrigerators are small even next to women.

The fridges are more as props than for storage, thus, they need not be that big

The same is true in live theatre. If the set includes (or is made up entirely of) a kitchen, such things as refrigerators, stoves, and other inescapable appliances are small because there is only so much room on the set for the action of the characters. It's not like real life where people can go into another room to continue what they're doing. If they did that on TV, they'd be going backstage, destroying the illusion.

The just look small because the "rooms" on a TV set are large. TV kitchens are much larger than regular kitchens so there's room for mikes, cameras, lights, and actors. If you watch carefully, what appears to be a small room on TV takes an actor ten steps to cross.
