Off course, normal life for the average 'ancient Briton' probably went on during the Roman occupation much as it had before. Not all of Roman Britain was civilised anyway. The country of palatial villas, hpyocaust heating etc., was confined to the south and west. In the north there was no civilisation - it was always just a military garrison area, with crude townships 'vicii' outside the fort walls.

Whilst some were civilised and using all the modern facilities, the common man still peed in his pit. However, things didn't change 'as soon as' the last legionary left. There were many civilised Romanised Brits left - remember the Arthur legends are probably founded on a folk memory of one such trying to hold things together. In 410AD they wrote to Honorius, the Emperor asking him for help but his reply was, basically ' I've got me own problems chummies, you're on your own now' Things continued to deteriorate during the 5th century. The Anglo Saxons who finally invaded, pushing the Britons back to Wales, Cornwall, etc., were somewhat in awe of the Roman remains they found across the land and tended to avoid them. They were the 'work of giants'

That is a question that historians are still asking. The Roman Empire had running water, sewers, they bathed on a regular basis, and so on. When the Empire fell, no one kept up maint. on all of the equipment, plus when a place fell to a conqueror, often times the place would be destroyed by the enemy and no one knew how to rebuild what the Romans had built. All over the Roman empire this happened. In Spain and the rest of Europe, and the Middle East. It took mankind 1500 years to bring it all back.
The same goes for other technology as well. The Romans had many advancements that were lost for centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Hi ~ I have moved from Australia to the UK and have been here for 2yrs 7 months and am fascinated by history. The Romans were awesome way ahead of their time they had central heating and lots of other things that we should have learned from but haven't. Their roads were awesome. Why didn't we learn from them because we stupid and tried to reinvent the wheel. How sad for us.
