All this talk about Prince Harry going to Iraq got me wondering: Who was the last member of the British Royal family to be killed in combat? I'm sure there are some extended members who were killed in one of the World Wars, but I was wondering who, if any, of the immediate Royal family have been killed in action?

It depends upon how wide you want to go with the 'family' - and how far back into history.

In terms of width, the Windsor family (formerly called the Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha family) had many family members in Germany during the war (some of them Nazis) and in all probability some were killed. Also, Prince Phillip's family, the Mountbattens (formerly known as von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksbergs) had many German members, with probably the same result.

In terms of history, Richard III was the last of the Plantagenet family to sit on the throne of England and was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Even earlier, Henry VI's son, Prince Edward, was killed in battle in 1471.

James of Scotland dying at Flodden is a fine answer ... unless you don't want to count a Scottish (as opposed to English, when the countries had separate monarchies) Royal.

In that case, I think the answer would be Richard I (the Lion Heart) of England, k.i.a. at the siege of Châlus-Chabrol castle in France, in 1199.

And, as for a mass killing of Royals in action, you probably have to go back to Hastings, 1066, when not only King Harold but also his brothers were all killed in a single afternoon.
