Anyone who says Brian Urlacher is overrated doesnt know anything about football. You have to watch a Bears game to truly appreciate how great Urlacher is. He can cover anyone on any play. He can catch running backs from behind, blow out tight ends and outmuscle Offensive lineman. He makes game changing plays on a consistent basis and he is still young. He IS the dominant linebacker in the NFL right now and will continue to be for many years to come. AJ hawk will be an above average LB but that is about it.

The main factor that defines Urlacher is time. He has been playing at such a high level for at least 3 or 4 seasons in a row. He's the star of the Bears, no other current player is even close in jersey sales.
I'm a big hawk fan, that coming from me being a big bucks fan, He may have a game or 2 that is on Urlachers level, but it will take at least 2 season of playing like that until he can be compared.

AJ Hawk played LB in college and probably in High School too. Urlacher didn't. He was a safety, he even returned punts. So, I laugh when people call him over rated or this guy OZ says he is not mobil. LOL, If AJ ever gets Def. Player of the year I will eat my hat. If he can personally change the tone of the game by himself I would like to see him do that. (Go look at the tape of the Ariz. Game) He tackled E. James in the open field on a critical down and forced a fumble that led to a score in that comeback. He covers TE 30 yards down the field. He even covered R. Bush one on one in a playoff game. Urlacher has been playing at a high level for years. When AJ get 3 great seasons in a row then maybe we can bring up this convo again?

Well Hawk has already displayed skills as superior as urlacher ( i even feel that in a couple of years when Hawk gets accustomed to the nfl conditioning program, which is much more accelerated than the college-level he was training at, he will be better than urlacher) however he doesn't have what Urlacher has, which was a great defensive coach in lovie smith and ex-defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Urlacher also has a tandem of extremely smart lb's, which allows him to roam freely without having to worry about his fellow lb's covering their men. Urlacher also has many years of experience over Hawk, however Hawk has youth and disicpline, which are two great tools. In two years Hawk will be the marquee player in the Packers defense, however it is going to be the Packers ownership to supply him with solid contributors on defense such as Nick Barnett. Adding Adilius Thomas will fire up that defense and the Packers do have quite a bit of money to spend in free agency. In a couple of years when Hawk adjusts to the Packer's style of defense Hawk will be a more mobile linebacker than Urlacher and will be that linebacker such as ray lewis or tedy bruschi, who alters any game he's in with one single play. I hope all of that makes sense. And of course Tom Brady did juke Urlacher in open field on a critical thrid down play on the winning drive of the game this year.

Yes, but not for a few years. But that comparison isn't as good as most think: Urlacher is great, but not as great as people consider him, he's overrated.
