When in golf below par is a good thing?

Par is what you should be able to get, the average amount required for a good golfer to hole out. If you are playing below par, you are playing below your average, below what you should be playing at.

You are right, ironically the only game it doesn't apply to is Golf ! This is because in most games or sports, the highest score wins Golf is the opposite and the lowest score wins.

Because in golf par is average and the lower your score the better you have played where as in other sports below average is poor. Silly question really thats buggered up my chance of ten points but it had no thought

I think in golf terms par means the average number of shots required to get around the hole/course - so if someone is playing below par they are playing below their usual ability

Below par means under the average. In golf, if you "score" below par (which is set at the achievable score for a scratch player), that's good. However, to "play" below average is obviously bad.

Par for the course means the level of performance expected. So below par means underachieving.

Par basically means average. So they are saying he is playing below his average
