1839 when the London Prize Ring Rules introduced the use of a 24 square-foot boxing ring with ropes surrounding it. Also known as the ‘Pugilistic Benevolent Society’ this was to mark the end of the days when spectators formed a ‘ring’ around the fighters.
That's quoted from a website on the history of boxing... Squares are easier to construct.

LOL, good question, never really wondered that myself.
I guess it's square so that there are corners for each boxer to 'rest' during those breaks. Because if it was round then...it's like, it's round, and there isnt a side for each other...hmm, what am I saying here? I'm confused.

cuz if it was a circle, then you cant say "on the left corner..." or "on the right corner".... you'd just say, maybe, "27 degrees due north.." lol. idk ^_^
