I am currently not in USA. I will be relocating to Houston in 6 months time. My employer has offered me salary of 60K annual + 10-15K bonus (70-75K total package) along with Health Insurance for family.
I will be moving with my wife (2 person family) Please guide me what would be my average expenditure per month in houston for average style living.
1) Apartment Rent (1-2 BR)
2) Food (If mostly cooked at home) & groceries
3) Utility bills (electricity, water, gas)
4) If i buy a car on installments (btw i have no idea of car prices in US. A decent second hand car will be ok for me), car insurance.
5) Any other major expenses..
How much should i expect to save after all expenditures if i have average living style?
Btw i dont have any idea how much taxes would be deducted from my salary? Say if my salary is 5K per month, how much taxes will be deducted if i am married and my wife is not working.
Is 70-75K per month in houston a good salary keeping in mind the living cost

First of all, congratulations on the job offer and welcome to our country and state. I'm a Texan and even though I've traveled extensively in North and Central America as well as in Europe and Asia, there's no place I'd rather live than in Texas. I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, about 250 miles (about 400 km) from Houston but I have relatives in Houston so I'm pretty familiar with that city too. Here are my answers:
1) Apartment Rent (1-2 BR) : From $800 to $ 1000/month
2) Food (If mostly cooked at home) & groceries: About $600/month
3) Utility bills (electricity, water, gas): About $250
4) If you buy a car on installments : A new reliable car can be bought for $ 1000 initial payment (just one time) and then, $ 250/month. Car insurance, assuming you're over 25: add another $100/month.
5) Any other major expenses..Gasoline (petrol) is still relatively cheap compared to Europe: About $ 150/month on the average (about $ 2.25/US gallon).
How much taxes would be deducted from [your salary]? Your salary is actually $6,250 per month, about 25% in taxes will be deducted so that'll leave you with about $4,688.
After the expenses listed above, you'll have $ 2, 338 left for other expenses and savings.
Your salary, for a professional man [i.e. a university graduate with a few years of experience] would be about average. For a non-professional man, it would be a good salary. The average household income in Houston is just over $ 58,000/year so you're in pretty good shape.

Dude, with that kind of salary and bonus do not throw your money away on rent. Buy a house. Real estate is a decent investment. You should be able to find something good for about $1300 a month (that includes all taxes), or $1000 a month in just house payments. Houston is a large city, so be sure to balance buying in a good area with your expected commute.
My wife and I spend about $250 a month on groceries, and we do nearly all our own cooking.
My monthly condo fee covers my electricity, water, and gas, so I can't help you there.
How many cars do you want? One? Two (you and your wife)? Go to this site to get car prices:

The site even has a calculator for expected payments. Be warned, if you buy a new car you'll want to buy an extended warranty, which will add about $1000 to the price.
70 to 75K a year (not a month) is a good salary for this area, and you should be able to live and save comfortably.

All good answers so far, I moved to Houston from another country as well in 1998 and currently live in the outskirts. For a city as big as it is, Houston's cost of living is low.
You will be doing well with that salary. Go to the personal calculators in www.paycheckcity.com to give you a good idea of much will be deducted
Since you are not from the USA the only issue you may encounter is your lack of rental and credit history. This will translate in you will have a little harder time setting everything up, from buying a car on credit to contracting your phone service to your rent of the apartment, not to worry though soon you will have it all figured out.
Contrary to the person that recommended you buy a house I would recommend that you rent so you can get a "feel" for the city and the areas you may wish to live in or avoid. And only after look for a home.

You should be able to live very comfortably on that salary if you live a moderate lifestyle - no expensive cars, furniture, or HDTV's.
The biggest differential will be the apartment. Nice basic apartments, in good neighborhoods, will run around $1000-$1200/month. If you see one listed for half of that - watch out, it's probably crime ridden.
A decent, "certified" reliable used car will be $12,000-$15,000 (look at www.carmax.com for an idea).
The moderate car,insurance, apartment, and utilities would probably run around $2000/month. The tax man will probably bite away about 25% after the deductions are taken And that leaves a healthy bit for savings, food, and entertainment.

I know where your coming from I also watch shows like that and wonder how people really have that kind of money. But anyways here in Oklahoma it really depends on what part of the state you live in. If you are closer to the bigger cities the cost goes up, but i live closer to smaller cities the houses range from 80 thousand to 200 thousand. We bought our house for 90 thousand and it is out in the country with 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 bath with 2 acres of land. So I guess it just really depends where you live. A house like mine would sell for about 150 thousand just 40 miles away.

you will live well on that, your money will go farther here than NY or CA, 850 1,2 br, car 400, gas 23, electric 85, car insureance 100, no state income tax but federal
