The net is limited, I agree with the person who suggests, going to the library and simply dipping in.
Frankly though, like every other book, some people write heavy going stuff and might put you off, so ask the librarian for suggestions.
Personally, if you are not the academic type, I would suggest books about individuals - Peter the Great, Frederick the Great, Elisabeth 1 and so on - or travel books. Text books can sometimes present facts in indigestible lumps.
Don't knock the TV - there are some excellent TV programmes from Time Team, Time Watch and the Coast. Don't forget the Open University broadcasts late at night. Check out the BBC and Channel 4 sites. Radio 4 frequently presents history programmes worth listening to, and you can check out their back catalogue. Access this via the BBC site.

Internet I find a little too disorganised for learning something completely from scratch. You'll have a far easier time spending a few days in a library.

www.wikipedia.org tells you everything about specific subjects, but is not so good as a general tutorial.
