The file format is CDA on music cds. There are however a multitude of players that can play other formats tho. If you have an older unit, it will only play files with the .cda extension.

The standard audio format you would want to use is the standard .wav. When you burn a disk from your computer and the software program asks what type of disk you want and you select an "audio cd". it will create .wav files for the songs. It is then readable in cd players in your car or home or wherever. If you put a purchased cd in your computer tray and "explore" the disk you will once again see.wav files on it for each song. As others here have stated there are many other files and car players now capable of playing those files, but the .wav file format is the most commonly used, and one that you should consider use if making your own cd to play in the car. As one person said mp3 is catching up quickly. This is an example of car audio units coming around to how computers speak rather than it has been for years with

binary...
but if you are asking how you should burn a disk... as a data disk, music disk, or as a multimedia disk, etc etc... your car cd player is (im guessing, but most of the time) only going to be able to read and play Music Format Disks. This type of format is very much more hevy then data (for example mp3)... an example would be with a music disk you can hold about 70 mins of music, where as a data disk can hold over... well dam... close to 300 (7 min) songs, which is around 16 hundred mins of music.
the only problem is, you need a smart enough of a system to play a data disk.
hope that helps

That guy up there is wrong x_-..
you use CD-R!!
a more uncommon one is CD-RW.. i dont think they work in car CD players.. they dont work in mine (but its from '99)
DVDs are movies..
VCD are video CDs and VERY uncommon.. VCDs are normally used for pirated/porn movies!!!!
But yeah if you wanna burn a CD to use in your car, use a CD-R :)
(Side note: The best tested CD-R for long time use is a Memorex Black Diamond!)

Actually any format will do. If it is VCD just install a VCD player, or better, install a DVD player instead. If you install a DVD you can play either a DVD or a VCD.
