Much cheaper and easier to just purchase some 1/4 inch Masonite (sold in 4x8 panels.) And its really smooth already.

Is this something that needs to be portable?

Panels suggests seams, as does having to use maybe more than 1 sheet of plywood but I have a suggestion or two.

An inexpensive route would be a flooring remnant shop and look for a piece of vinyl sheet stock, large enough for your efforts.

Plywood, if you have the budget, comes in veneer stock in 4 x 8 sheets. Birch is common, but expensive (relatively speaking) It's smooth enough to (pardon this) run yer rear over without splintering you.

to make the plywood smooth, put some THICK laquer on it like they do in a bar. it can be applied thick ot thin and you end up with a shine finish. The bars even slide glasses across them, thats how smooth they are. Very inexpensive at Home Depot.

panels for linoleum I dont think exist. you can get peel and stick vinyl tiles or full sheet vinyl. to make you plywood smooth you will need to put a skim coat of patch levelor or leveling conrete. both are the verually the same. then you can glue or stick the tile or sheet product on the wood. If you choose the tile then make sure you use a latex primer before you place the tile on, this will make them stick better.

sand it, paint it

when it dries....sand it and paint it again.

when it dries. Sand it again lightly.

By that time it will be cheaper to buy a couple panels from menards or Home depot ( in the panelling section) that already have a smooth finish.
