Remember United after Jaap Stam left? Porous at the back! When Rio arrived, so did a long period of stability for MU. John Terry is inspirational and Chelsea needs him as much as United needs Rio. Both marshal their defences extremely well.
In the previous season I would pick John. It is tough to argue otherwise as he won the Premier league with Chelsea - and at a canter too.
But for this season I would say Rio is the best. John had a prolonged abscence and I will rank his performance this year behind the likes of Rio, Vidic, Steve Finnan (Liverpool) and Nicky Shorey (Reading).
MU let in a miserly 19 goals in 28 matches so far; Chelsea conceded 19 goals in 27 matches, without John for 15 games.
The question of who defends better has to be on current form. To that the only answer can be Rio Ferdinand.

John Terry is the better defender because of his ability to tackl which is far greater than Rio's. Also he is better than Rio in the air, so he can also score goals from corners, and that is why John Terry was given England captancy instead of Rio who wasnt even considered!

John Terry has more important qualities than Ferdinand, Terry (for his age) seems wiser, has much of a leaders qualities. He knows how, where and when to stop attackers, Ferdinand is more or less a tough defender!!

John Terry of course. He always defend the goal post with his life and is a crucial defender for Chelsea and England. Plus, he is also an all round great leader and a fabulous player whenever he is on the pitch.

Both are over rated.
Terry is a little better then Rio.
If Rio had good supporting players like Terry then he would be the better one.

John Terry because of his leadership. To the person who said they both play boring football. defending isnt meant to look good its to defend the goals going in. leave the skillful football to the strikers and attackers. Thats what they are paid for. Ur probably american or something!
