Freeze-ups are most often due to Microsoft being in the 19th century.

Next reason for freeze-ups is a bad PSU, so replace it with at least a 500 Watt unit. (Even then, I just had 8 PSUs fail due to the capacitor plague of Taiwan makers who stole the wrong EPA compliant formula, in 1999!)!

Taiwan computer makers continued to use those leaky and explosive caps through 2005, years AFTER they knew about the problems, and we consumers get to pay for their FRAUD and screw-ups!

Make damn sure you do NOT purchase anything made in Taiwan!

Even BMW is having automobile computers fail! So much for Taiwan Quality!

So, to be certain what it is, get http://pclinuxos.com and boot, run in the CDrom, and see if it locks up. If so, it is probably a bad PSU, or it has now affected your mainboard.

Look at the capacitors, for bulging tops, or bottoms. the tops should be flat, and the scores in a K shape. An X shaped score means it was made in the factories where they stole the Japanese EPA formula and it was not complete.

The Japanese use a last step, a stabilizer, so the dielectric paste stops expanding after pouring. The stupid Taiwan assistant who stole it did not get the full formulary. Taiwan makers deny the problem, even though major scientists have shown them their problem.

We all pay, for their $100 million mistake!

So, if the Electrolytic caps are standing crooked in the PSU, they might have blown! That usually takes the regulators with them.

Taiwan sucks bad! Cost me over $800 in replacement of 8 mainboards and PSUs. at wholesale! And, two CPU's were killed, also.

Did I mention that Taiwan SUCKS?

it depends on various facts. system speed, the type of hdd etc; u have to connect the 2nd HDD and switch ON the system. then u can use a utility called Ghost (Norton) to transfer data. if u r first HDD doesn't have any errors, 10 gb data transfer takes barely 8- 15 min, depending on system speed and RAM.
