how do i put my pc in safety mode?

it is called Safe mode. while booting keep on pressing "F8" key on first row of your keyboard. then from the menu which follows select safe mode. however u can't access graphic features, sound, cd-rom drive etc; while running safe mode.

When it boots up keep tapping the F-8 key

When you see the message "Please select the operating system to start" on system startup, press F8.
