Er - sorry, but your calculator is correct. Consequently I doubt you'd be likely to get a reward. Here's the 'checking' method I use in my book:

Multiply the final figure of each of the numbers; this will reveal the final figure of your answer. Since 7x6=42, which finishes with a '2', we should expect the answer to finish with the digit '2' - which it does.

Look at the first figure of each number & multiply these, then multiply two numbers which are each 1 higher. Thus we have 1x6=6 & 2x7=14, so we should find a 'start' to the answer between 2 & 14.

Referring to the step above, count the number of 'ignored' digits - i.e. those which have been 'ditched' by using only one digit at a time. We have ignored only one, that being the '7' in the number '17'. We would therefore need to add this 1 figure after the 'start' of the number (i.e. 2 to 14).

The final step is to check what I call the 'markers' of the numbers. Add the digits, see what you get - if it's 10 or more, add again & keep on until you are left with one digit only; this is the marker. Markers follow the numbers they represent; although divisions & subtractions may need to be checked 'backwards', that is not the case here. 1+7=8 (marker of 8), and 6 is its own marker. 8x6=48, 8=12, and 1+2=3; thus the marker of the final answer MUST be 3. 1+0+2=3; the marker has been achieved. The answer fo 102 passes all the tests, yet the answer of 104 fails most. Failure of only one test means the answer is wrong; passing all the tests is a very strong suggestion that the answer is correct.

I'm sorry, but your calculator has the right answer.

I'm sorry to tell you this but 17 multiplied by 6 actually = 102.
The calculator wasn't wrong. Have you already sent the letter? I'd be a little embarrased if I were you. Oh well..where did you get the 104 from? Did you do the calculation in your head or wrongly on paper?

er very good of u to write and let casio know but i feel the mistake is on ur part.........because ur calculator is not out of its mind it is roght 17 * 6 is 102.any calculator in the world wud tell u that!!!!!!!!!!!1
now 17 * 6..... 7 * 6 is 42...so we write 2 and 4 gets carried over then 1*6 is 6 +4=10 so we get 102 and not 104

If you really want something to write to Casio about, write about the ridiculous way their calculators handle something like 477 - 20% or 477 / 20%. The results aren't even the same for different models. I've given up using the % function. If you want to knock 20% off 477 you have to key in 477 x 20% -. After that, you can't proceed to do anything else with the result. Better to use 477 x 0.8, and ignore the % key altogether.

Let us do it .

17 x 6 means the number 17 to be added to itself 6 times.Ok?

so 17 x2 =17+17 ie, 34

17x 3= 17+17+17 ie 34+17=51

17x4= 17+17+17+17 ,ie 51+17= 68

17x5 = 17+17+17+17+17ie, 68+17= 85,

17x6= 17+17+17+17+17+17,ie,85+17=102

You can trust your Casio!

Yes you probably will, because you have a TI calculator, and Casio is always looking for ways to put down TI. However, cross your fingers that they don't check the sum before they send the reward.
