I remember a scary one from the 1970's, narrated by the late Donald Pleasance (always a good voice for horror!). The film showed young kids playing near water, and a deathly Grim Reaper like figure waiting for them to get into difficulty and drown.
BTW here's a good link to watch some old Public Service films:

The Green Cross Code with Dave Prowse (the guy who was in the Darth Vader costume in Star Wars)(obviously they changed his voice to that of the much more authoritarian James Earl Jones for the film). Stop Look and Listen! (personally think these should be reintroduced as now I drive I am constantly amazed by the amount of people who run across roads when they can clearly see you, so obviously then it would be my fault if I ran them over even though they had known I was there in the first place)
The chip pan fire ones
Loads of fire safety adverts.(Get out, call us out, and stay out)
There were ones where a baby would pull an iron off an ironing board and scald itself. How stupid would you have to be to let a kid crawl around the floor when you were ironing anyway? Surely just common sense!
Obviously loved the 'Charlie' ads with the boy who was able to interpret his cat's 'mieows' into sound advice, although was always concerned when about the one where his mum was talking to the milkman at the door. Personally I would have hung around to keep an eye on them instead of walking off with my friends. In a similar vein were the ones for road safety where the toy squirrel would get run over by a dustbin van. Very surreal, but they did the trick
I see they have recently brought back the coastguard ones too.

Charley says always tell your Mummy before you go off somewhere...(rave music)
I found out earlier this year that Kenny Everrett did the voice of Charley, the cat.
Also 'Protect and Survive' in case we ever got bombed by the USSR (but we never did!)
The Green Cross Code Man - with Alvin Stardust
Tufty the squirrel and his silly friend who got knocked over whilst wanting an ice cream! Remember The Tufty Club at school?
And not playing near level crossings.
The Department of Transport also did one regarding motorway lights but I can't find it on YouTube. It was around the late 70s.
That's all I can remember at the mo.

I remember several for lifeboats, and one where a mum leaves the kitchen with an iron on, and her child pulls the cord and it cuts to a scene of the iron melting the child's dolls head!!! Quite gruesome if I remember correctly!
I saw a couple at school, one on drugs starring Frank Butcher, and one based around the Leah Betts story.
But best by far was aquiring a DVD called "Charley Says", which includes more than 150 public info films, for £5.99 on Play.com! Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris, Alvin Stardust... they're all there. Splink!

The late Cyril Fletcher, about washing your hands before preparing food.
I remember bits of the rhyme,
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX??
The next day dawned as next days will
To find poor Gertie proper ill.
The doctor came and shook his head
It's not a cold or chill he said
Perhaps the food you've given Gertie
Was chopped up when your hands were dirty
Proud Mama was really hurt
She said "In my home there's no dirt"
The doctor said, in general terms,
On your hands there's lots of germs.
Before preparing food we ought'r
Wash our hands in soapy water.
Thats all I can remember, I think that it was from the late 60's early 70's ??
Ian S (Up the list) Yes Night Mail, was Sir John Betjemans voice. Here is the whole text by W H Auden

The one where the kids fly their kite too close to the power lines.... BOOOOOOM
And the one about a boy called Robbie who loved football. He went on the railway track to fetch his ball back, and got hit by a train and lost his legs. The final shot is his now unused footie boots hanging on the back of his bedroom door.
