A fire on an Indonesian ferry killed at least 17 passengers on Thursday and forced men, women and children to jump into the Java Sea, confirmed officials.

A cargo worker said a woman handed him her 18-month-old baby before jumping overboard.

"I tried to scale a rope, but was knocked into the water by a falling passenger, still clutching the baby," said 29-year-old Heru. "I swam to a water cooler and then spotted the mother clinging to another cooler nearby... the baby was crying 'Mama! Mama! and she insisted I hand over the child."

He said shortly after handing over the baby, large waves pulled them both under.

Rescue workers did save many of the ferry's 300 passengers, pulling them from the water.

"It was terrifying,'' said Yas Rijal, 33, who was with his wife and son on the upper deck when the fire broke out. "Suddenly flames bust from the lower deck. The crew ordered us to put on yellow life vests and we jumped.''

The fire reportedly started in a truck on the Levina 1's car deck, hours after the vessel left the capital of Jakarta for the northwestern island of Bangka.

Aerial footage showed black smoke and a fierce fire billowing from the ferry.

"The fire started on the lowest level and got bigger and bigger,'' said Ebun, 30, who managed to get hold of a life jacket. "Many people, including me, jumped into the water. Someone came and pulled me onto another ship.''

Survivors were taken back to Jakarta and treated at nearby hospitals.

Transportation Minister Hatta Rajasa said 15 bodies were recovered and that at least 275 people were rescued. He said another 17 people were missing.

Those numbers conflict with the ship's log -- which is often incomplete as boats are frequently overloaded -- that indicates that there were 228 passengers, 42 trucks and eight cars on board.

In December, a passenger ferry sank in the Java Sea, killing more than 400 people. Then, just days later, a passenger plane crashed killing all 102 people on board.

This is a tourist spot -

Many locals said many myths about this place (like ghost story and stuff like that)

The sea isn't particularly that good there are so much pollution (I would go to a different spot instead)

There WERE many restaurants and many gift shops however after the recent disaster I wouldn't know

As far as I know, nothing is going on. But there was a tsunami last year. I think it was in July.
